CONCEPT
Ursa Beach—digitally reconstructed within an algorithmic environment—serves as the stage for Narrationem. A different kind of reality enters this space: six years of satellite records of the Tagus River, subjected to fluid processing by a generative algorithm. Radar and infrared data from the European Space Agency (ESA) are transformed into abstract visual sequences—oscillating lines, organic textures, sediments of a digital flow. Set against this mutability is a synthetic voiceover that ponders aloud what it sees, without being certain that it sees anything at all. Within the video narrative, the time-lapse oscillations of the Tagus River’s water quality are translated into pulsating visual gradients. Here, data is born from the chaos of orbital recordings, exists as a fleeting pattern, and vanishes into digital noise.
The data flows of the Tagus River, captured over a six-year interval, become a liquid metaphor for the „data metabolism“ of the landscape. The algorithm translates changes in water quality and riverbank erosion into abstract visual sequences—oscillating lines and organic textures that evoke the movement of both water and geological strata. Just as the river reshapes its bed, the datasets recast the physical matter of the earth into digital sediment.
The synthetic voiceover—generated by AI based on human reflections on transience—establishes a dialogue between the virtual and the physical: Ursa Beach, digitally reconstructed within an algorithmic environment, serves as an „unstable network of visual relations.“ The viewer observes the code traversing the landscape—sometimes tracing it, at other times rewriting it entirely. This interaction resembles the dance of the tides, where one cannot distinguish whether the water shapes the sand, or the sand the watercourse.
Magna Mutatio critiques the illusion of permanence; while satellites fix a single moment in time, generative predictions reveal the fragility of any archival process. As Jacques Derrida reminds us in Archive Fever, the digital trace is not a neutral record, but a performative act that always carries the risk of erasure. The work poses the question: Is a digital footprint more transient than a footprint in the sand?
The final sequence, where the Tagus River empties into the ocean, symbolizes the inexorability of change—technological representation becomes both its victim and its instrument. Magna Mutatio does not merely show the transformation of the landscape; it exposes the paradox of our attempt to capture time. As Vilém Flusser noted: „Technical images are phantoms—they reveal a world that has already disappeared.“
