CONCEPT

Flumen gen 2.0 does not capture the Tagus River itself, but rather its data metabolism. Sentinel-2 (ESA) satellite imagery is processed through the Se2WaQ script, which uses spectral analysis to translate six water quality parameters into layered color scales. Here, the algorithm is not an instrument of documentation but a living translator: it dissolves empirical measurements into abstraction, and scientific precision into aesthetic indeterminacy. Each output represents a unique moment of this metabolism—a fleeting imprint born from the chaos of frequencies and vanishing into noise.

At the core of the work is the Se2WaQ script, which transforms six water quality parameters (chlorophyll-a, cyanobacteria, turbidity, CDOM, DOC, and water color) into layered color scales. Sentinel-2 (ESA) satellite data is subjected to spectral analysis, in which empirical models convert values into abstract maps; here, the algorithm acts as a metaphorical translator, dissolving scientific objectivity into aesthetic indeterminacy. „Here, data is not stored, but metabolized—much like a river digests sediment.“

The layering of digital models evokes the sedimentation of natural processes: dark blue transitions document the cycle of organic matter, green bands reveal algal blooms, and red patches signal toxic turbidity. Yet these visual layers are not a static record—each giclée print contains random variations that disrupt the illusion of permanence. „The landscape here is not a map, but a fluid dialogue between precision and entropy.“

Inspired by the principles of dynamic ecology, a generative algorithm rewrites the data in real time—each print is a unique „moment of metabolism“ that cannot be replicated. This transience reflects the paradox of technological representation: we strive for an eternal record, yet capture only a shimmer on the surface. The anthropocentric notion of nature as a stable archive dissolves here, yielding to a fluid dialogue between precision and entropy.

Magna Mutatio: Flumen gen 2.0 does not render the Tagus River present, but rather its fleeting digital footprint. Just as the river reshapes the landscape, the algorithm recasts data in an infinite cycle of birth and decay. This fragility points to a broader illusion of permanence in the digital era: technologies, though seemingly eternal, are as ephemeral as the natural elements. „What, then, is truly permanent? Only change itself.“
